I recall reading somewhere that in the not too distant future within the Schengen area only ID's with biometric data will be considered valid for ID purposes.
In Spain without a TIE that would demand the carrying of ones passport.
I suspect that those who doggedly refuse to exchange their residencias for TIE's are in large part the same folk who have hung on to their UK driving licences until until the last millisecond - or beyond!

The British Ambassador to Spain and various other expat bodies have pointed out that although there is no deadline to exchange the green A4 residencia for the TIE, at the moment, there are distinct advantages in doing so.

As I don`t drive, I don`t have any photo id, apart from my passport. So the TIE card is good for me as it fits in my purse.........................
