Thank you for your comment Fred and I am a bit confused by this fish.

Following your comment I Googled Tilapia and the results returned seemed conflicting - some saying the fish was harmful, but others saying only some Tilapia are harmful due to the way they are farmed ie. poor conditions, contaminated water being cited as reasons.

The recipe is from a "healthy options" publication, so I assumed that it would be good for people. The same publication also had two other variations of this recipe, Southwest Tilapia and Italian Tilapia.

Five reasons not to eat tilapiaBy Tatiana Hernandez on 10/31/2014

"Tilapia is worse for you than bacon." This is the title of the short article of Eat This, Not That , where they explain the chilling details of the diet of this fish.

These fish feed on the sediments at the bottom of the body of water where they live and are known in English as "bottom feeders".

According to the website team , the fish is easy to farm and easy to sell. They state that "for the first time, in 2012, production of farm-raised fish surpassed that of meat, reaching a record 66 million tonnes, compared to meat at 63 million."

The sad thing is that with a view to a healthy diet, you buy the cheapest fish, tilapia. If what the experts say is true that "you are what you eat", you will be ingesting toxins, hormones, dangerous fats and even animal feces.

So, the saying that "cheap is expensive" calls into question the benefits of eating this fish instead of any other food.

“Studies have found that the inflammatory potential of farmed tilapia is higher than that of a hamburger, donuts… even pork bacon!” according to the writer.

Here are five reasons this page gives to remove tilapia from your menu:

It is the worst kind of fat:

"Compared to other fish, farmed tilapia contains relatively small beneficial amounts of omega-3 fatty acids." The consumption of this oil is the main reason why it is beneficial to eat fish frequently.

“While a serving of salmon contains over 2,000 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids, a serving of tilapia has about 135 milligrams. Therefore, since the diet of farmed tilapia consists of corn and soybeans rather than lake plants, proportionately the omega-6 fat content is through the roof, which studies have shown to harm the heart, brain and brain. to the state of mind”.

They have a disgusting diet:

“There is a good chance that the tilapia that is served on your plate was raised on a diet of excrement. Studies from the Johns Hopkins: Center for a Livable Future revealed the lurid details of disease-ridden fish farms in Asia, where pig and chicken feces are served as a low-cost alternative to fish food”…

They have changed their gender:

“Virtually all tilapia sold in American supermarkets have undergone a sex change as a result of being fed methyltestosterone during early life. Shellfish experts consider the effects of this hormone to be insignificant to human health. However, there are studies that suggest it can be highly toxic to the liver."

They cause a negative environmental impact:

“Environmentalists argue that the intensive unregulated farming of tilapia is damaging ecosystems, leaving dead lakes and extinct species in poor countries with practices prohibited in the United States. For example, in Nicaragua, large amounts of fish are raised in cages where the waste contaminates the lake water.”

Eat this, not tilapia!:

“When it comes to choosing fish that is healthy for you and the Earth, follow rule number one: stay away from hatcheries. Farm-raised shellfish, not just tilapia, can have 10 times more toxins than wild-caught fish, according to Harvard researchers. Your best choices are: Wild Alaskan Salmon, Alaska Pollok, Atlantic Cod, Clams, Blue Crab, Atlantic Mackerel, Striped Bass, Sardines , herring, rainbow trout (Rainbow Trout) and flounder (Flounder).

What do you think, you eat it again?

For every article against eating Tilapia there seems to be an article in favour.

The only consistency I have found between both sides of the debate is that people need to ensure that they have confidence the fish has been farmed using high hygiene standards. You would hope that buying from a reputable source that such standards would be monitored closely to ensure the healthy quality of the product before it goes on sale to consumers.

Out of interest I took a quick look at Carrefour and Alcampo online. Both sell Tilipia in frozen form, and both currently have it as sold out. The labelling of the fish on the Alcampo website shows the source as China, the label on the Carrefour is not fully visible to see the source.

For the purpose of the recipe, the Tilapia can be substituted for other white fish including Cod, Sole, Hake or Monkfish.
