On Mailonline for example you can choose between 'Site' or 'Web' in their search box.
The "Google" search box was not solely linked to Google, and the search box that is now on the page will return exactly the same results albeit in a different format/style. As mentioned in another post, the "Google" search box would return results from this forum plus from the internet, or just results from internet when no results are found for this forum.

The rationale behind the "Google" search box is that people do not need to leave the forum to see the results that Google returns for the same word(s) searched on the forum. One of the main reasons why this type of search box is used on many sites is to keep people engaged so they do not need to go off forum to the likes of Google to repeat the search.
