Tipping In Spain
Tipping In Spain
Tipping etiquette in Spain comes up on numerous occasions in the papers and travel blogs, but it appears outside (American) influences are at work.

Few thoughts:-
a. Giving customers the options of 5%, 8% or 10%, will they assume they can leave no less than 5%, but no more than 10% with 8% being an average, not realising they not obliged to leave any fixed percentage ?
b. Giving customers the option of 5%, 8% or 10%, will they simply just go for the 5% because it is the lowest, or will they go for the 8% because it is in the middle and they do not want to appear to under or over tip ?
c. Wonder how the 5% compares to what the average customer leaves as a monetary amount now ? If say the average is 2 - 3% now, than 5% would be a considerable improvement before you get into b. above.

If I’m generally pleased with the food and service I receive I usually tip 10%. I don’t like being pressured into tipping.
Re: Tipping In Spain
We always tip according to the service, up to 10% and we would stear clear of any restaurants who expect you to tip for what you considerer bad service.
Tipping is expected in the States, although we have always found the service very good and portions are large anyway, and you factor the tip into the overall cost of the meal.

Always always tip in Spain...what i am completely against is restaurants that automatically impose a 10 or 15 % service charge.....put it on the price of the meals you are advertising.

The best thing about this forum is that it keeps frogface and his brood happy, cos they've nowt else to talk about.

Several in the UK such at Cotes add 10% service charge on the bill - which you can knock off. However, on the odd time we have been the service has been good and we would have left about that anyway. We generally tip but do really like to decide how much ourselves not have it decided for us.
