Mercadona says goodbye to two of its
best-known sections

The chain led by Juan Roig is already testing a new store model. The T9 format modifies
several classic sections.

Mercadona is preparing new changes for its supermarkets that could be extended to a large part of its network in Spain. The company is testing a new store model in the Valencian town of Xirivella, an initiative that introduces a different way of organizing the space, arranging the product range, and selling the products.

This new format, called T9, primarily aims to optimize internal processes. The model provides greater visibility to products placed directly on pallets, modifies the aisle layout (making them wider), and reorganizes the shelves to increase staff productivity and reduce unnecessary movement.

Changes in traditional sections

The reorganization of the product range is one of the highlights of this change and affects some of the supermarket's traditional sections. In the T9 format, ready meals are integrated with the bakery and pastry section, unifying areas that previously operated independently.

This integration does not mean the disappearance of the takeaway food offer, but rather that Mercadona concentrates all its ready-to-eat products in a single aisle, which makes it easier to understand the offer and improves customer convenience during shopping.

The most significant change for consumers will be the reduction in assisted sales. The new prototype eliminates traditional deli and fish counters, as well as prepared food counters, with the aim of improving efficiency, reducing waiting times, and streamlining the shopping experience. This is complemented by a more understated design, with less signage and labeling.
