It all depends on where your son lives.
If he lives here then he should be resident and in whick case he can't drive a UK plated vehicle anyway except under the conditions mentioned by Fred.
If he lives in the UK then the vehicle should be in insured, taxed and MOT'd in the UK.

I hope the people who told you that are going to pay the fine when the men in green stop you but I suppose they know more than the Guardia do about Spanish law

I did not know the answer before I asked on here.
The people who told me are the insurance company and they say they know the law, if you know better prove it.
