You can't blame the EU's response to BREXIT on this because this requirement to use a VPN for iPlayer etc has been the case for many years. It IS the EU's fault though, because they insist that broadcasters can only broadcast within the UK. They can't stop the broadcast signals reaching northern France, the Netherlands etc, but they do insist that the broadcasters limit their internet television to IP regions.

Strangely though, it is possible to watch programmes broadcast by the Spanish broadcaster RTVE, the equivalent of BBC (https://www.rtve.es/), in the UK. Another example of the EU's attitude to its own rules perhaps?

Legal or not, the BBC don't want you watching it from Spain,
That's why Spanish IP's are blocked.
You are only using a VPN to hide that fact.
If it was acceptable you wouldn't need a VPN in the first place ?

No, it's the EU that don't want you watching the BBC in Spain. The BBC are legally obliged to try and block it using regional IPs.

When you try to download from BBC iPlayer without using a VPN, you get the following message. I've tried finding out what the ' rights issues' are but I've not had much successs, but I don't think it's anything to do with the EU, but I could be wrong. ;)

BBC iPlayer only works in the UK. Sorry, it's due rights issues.
