Bad photo because of fly screen. Saw a jay the other day.

That's unusual for a woodpecker to be at the base of a tree.
I use to frequently see woodpeckers in the apple orchards when I lived in rural Somerset, and use to have one that regularly visited my garden and raided the birdfeeders - along with the squirrels.

We get a beautiful woodpecker in our garden here in Surrey, sometimes there for 30 minutes or more, poking in the lawn for ant larvae. Really lovely to see them close up.

Lots of bugs on the floor. He was on the tree as well but at least 50% of time on the floor. We see woodpeckers in our garden in UK, never once on the floor and only on the 'wood pecker' bird feeder. We have so many different finches in UK garden. A retired neighbour a few doors up the road said Robins eat out of his hand, they are there year round.

We get jays too, also recently wrens which we haven't seen for years, and in the last few weeks goldfinches. When we first moved here I thought most birds were "pretty sparrows"!!

We had one on the fat ball feeder he was there for ages, only ever seen him once but it was lovely.
