Pedro Sanchez announced today bicycles are now included under public transport subsides, and according went on to announce the allocation of €40 million in subsides for the bicycle.
Subsidy No. 1 - €20 million
- €10 million to reduce the rate charged for hiring a bike in cities that already offer that service. BiciMad in Madrid was used as an example - looks like a London 'Boris Bikes' style service.
- €10 million to bring a BiciMad style service to cities where a service does not already exist. Wonder whether if this reached Torrevieja people would still opt for scooter over bicycle if given a choice? Could a city perhaps ban scooter hire in preference for a BiciMad service ?
Subsidy No. 2 - €20 million
This subsidy will probably prove popular, whilst the funding lasts of course. This subsidy of €20 million is to enable individuals and urban delivery companies to purchase bicycles with 'assisted pedaling' (I assume ebikes). Might see alot of bicycle companies starting up !
