It is a general allowance that is given to everyone to cover general expenses during the year. It is in addition to the personal allowance, the sliding scale earnings allowance and any allowances for children and dependants.

Re: residency cost
I think the rule for non-EU citizens is 90 days and you cannot apply for visa to enter again for 6 months. For EU citizens its 183 days in any 365 or something like that before you are considered resident. I should add in reality if you have a holiday home or are renting accommodation for holiday purposes and you return home each year nobody takes any notice of how long you are in Spain as there are no entry or exit stamps for EU residents.

Hola Lincoln 45,
I was reading your suggestion about getting an Irish passport. Our NIE says we are British because we live in Northern Ireland. Do you believe that having an Irish passport would allow us to stay longer if we wanted? Surly we would have to change our NIE ....I am at a loss to understand. Are all these pieces of information facts? To be honest, we only go over for a weeks at a time so the restrictions shouldn’t affect us but at the same time, I would like to know.
As a resident in Ireland, I can have two passports...ie one British and one Irish. I presume that would either confuse the spanish authorities or make no difference!
Bee will know for sure.
This residency thing must be a very difficult decision to make. Please clarify, you don’t give up your rights to return to your homeland ,do you? What happens if you travel over to the UK and become ill, are you still eligible to have free hospital treatment or must you pay? I can foresee changes in the NHS in the future and rather than presenting yourself at hospital, I think we will have to prove that we are eligible for care before being seen.
Do you think many brits will begin trying to sell up in Spain like the Germans did years ago? It really annoys me that potential house buyers aren’t prepared to pay the asking price in Spain. It’s time to increase the asking prices in order to allow for the insulting offers! I am judging by the people I have watched on TV looking for a PLACE IN THE SUN.
I seem to have gone off on a tangent, forgive me but I look forward to hearing your opinions.

Re: residency cost
Rosemary your NIE is for life it never changes doesn't matter where you are from EU or non-EU. You need it for lots of things as you know legal, revenue, utilities, padron, most things to do with local government or State. If you apply for Residency yes you can return to the UK and do a 'baja' from the Spanish system. Regarding health services and if you become ill in the UK as an EU citizen. There may well be a reciprocal arrangement to cover this . If there isn't then you will have to pay or have private insurance to cover you. The main reason to apply for an Irish passport , in your case, would be for customs/immigration purposes. You would have the same standing as an EU citizen and could go through the EU channel at Airports and avail of the same rights as EU citizens regarding entry to the Schengen area. For Residency you would apply as an EU citizen which has less onorous regulations. Again I don't know how health cover would work out as recognition of S1 and SIP is dependent on membership of EU

@Beardyboy
Some good questions. Do I have all the answers, no I don't.
The EU are going to introduce this Etias, where you will have to apply for permission to enter the Schengen area before travelling. As I understand it they will be looking for info, such as do you have medical insurance etc. If you want to stay longer than 90 days you will have to get a visa.
I have both passports, mainly for convenience. As to whether or not, you will have to change NIE, I don't know. I did ask some legal beagles down here about it as I'm selling up and returning to the UK, and it could make a difference to how much tax I will have to pay, but they don't know.
You can't give up your British citizenship. I do know some people who have returned to the UK after living in Spain for over 25 years, without any problems. As it stands at he moment, if you are of pension age, you are entitled to return to the UK for treatment under the NHS. If you need emergency care in the UK, you will get free treatment at that point, regardless of where you come from.
There is some talk, and I mean some talk, about the ROI issuing EHIC to Northern Ireland citizens. I don't know if that's going to happen. The one person I could get some reasonably reliable (if that makes sense) information from is not in Spain at the moment.
If I get any definite info I will let you know. Until the politicians on both sides stop strutting around like cockerels, there is going to be a load of waffle floating around.
As for "A Place In The Sun" makes me laugh when they say, "We have found a place within your budget", but conveniently forget to mention the approximate 13% in fees.

Re: residency cost
I don't suppose it's possible to have residency - but not be tax resident?
I.e. pay pensions into uk bank and pay tax here?

Sorry for not getting back to say a big thank you for your advice. Our baby grandson was delivered by C Section yesterday so great excitement and madness running up and down to visit at the hospital.
It’s funny how life changes. The news this morning told us that many people are now locked in quarantine in a hotel in a Torrevieja. My brother in law has a wonderful family place in the costa adeje area where the hotel is. Unfortunately,he has been unwell since before Christmas and wasn’t allowed to travel . Both he and my sister are disappointed not to be relaxing there in the sun instead of dealing with the weather here in Northern Ireland. Then you hear the news and immediately you are glad to have missed the ghastly sand storms and today,we hear about a Corona virus and suddenly, you think differently! Safer at home.
I pray that it doesn’t hit you people in Spain as we are mostly in the older age group even though we think we are young.
Yes, life is strange.
Stay safe all of you.

Congratulations for the birth of your new grandson, another generation to carry on the family name. I think the celebratory cava has affected your typing though, I think you mean Tenerife and not Torrevieja, lol . Anyway enjoy the new edition to your family.Beardyboy wrote: 25 Feb 2020 13:44 Sorry for not getting back to say a big thank you for your advice.
