The number of families looking to move to Spain over the coming months is likely to increase especially with the introduction of the NOMAD VISA and the increased publicity regarding the modification of the NLV to Self-Employed and Working Visas.

Whatever visa you intend to apply for, it is often the case that the single largest expense is health insurance. And if you have children that expense is even greater!!

However, did you know that children who are resident in Spain are entitled to FREE healthcare.

The law on healthcare is national though, as is often the case, the documentation that is required may differ depending on the region, so this applies to EVERY CHILD!

The first step is to apply for residency for the child, for all those arriving on the back of a visa (lets assume it’s the Non Lucrative Visa NLV) applying for residency is part of that process so should only be a formality.

In the normal course of events, in Spain, the parents through their employment or self employment status would be able to register their child for FREE health care as their “dependent” or “beneficiaro” BUT we have have already established that under the rules of the NON Lucrative Visa you can’t work (or be self-employed), meaning that the parents don’t have access to the Spanish Health System so seemingly blocking the route to free healthcare (Including dental) for their children, OR DOES IT?

The answer thankfully is no, as I have said EVERY CHILD IS ENTITLED TO FREE HEALTHCARE and in the circumstances mentioned above what you need to do is apply under the ´bajos recursos´ scheme.

So a child must be resident before you can apply for free healthcare, but!! to get residencia in the first place, you have to prove all your family has private healthcare, is it a catch 22 scenario.
