Disappointed but not surprised

#1

Post: # 50546Post stowie39 »

On our last visit in November I was pleased to see the installation of 4 or 5 loos on the Torrevieja promenade, with a notice board alongside giving cost timescale etc (2 months)

Fast fwd to today and there they are still barricaded off, no signs of being commissioned.

If it was one of these toilet's below then they have had a few problems, including connection to water and electric supply. Only last month at a governing board meeting of the Council was the price agreed for the public using them, this being another requisite step to the toilets opening - the price agreed upon was 50 cents for 15 minutes.

Thanks for the update,

For me money well spent, with my bladder access to toilets is quite important to me. I end up spending loads of money on cafes just to use the loos.

How do you put more money in the meter if you are on the loo when your time runs out

I am sure the cafes are grateful of your trade, and will be very disappointed to lose your custom when the toilets are finally opened.

Joking aside, access to public toilets anywhere in the world seems to be extremely difficult. I know people who deliberately will not drink for several hours before they go out because they are not sure where they are visiting has public toilets, and refraining from drinking is not good for the body.

I think it is London where a lot of the public toilets that were located below ground had been converted into trendy bars.

Very good question Fred.

You got me thinking then about the 15 minutes, and what if you have somebody in a wheelchair with a carer, and that carer has to assist the person on and off the loo, even perhaps undress/dress that person too. Is 15 minutes long enough ?

I cannot imagine it would be a place where people would hang around in to ensure they got there 50 cents worth, and most people would probably be in and out within a few minutes as opposed to a quarter of an hour, but there may be occasions such as the wheelchair example above where people will require longer than 15 minutes. Should there be a set time limit for the 50 cents ?

I assume there must be sort some of countdown clock inside to inform people how long they have left ?

Does the door suddenly spring open when time is up?

I’ve always found the non provision of toilet facilities in Spain to be somewhat of an anathema. Many years ago the only facilities available in Torrevieja were the disgusting toilets in the market or round the back of the esplanade stalls which meant that any attempt to buy anything there was accompanied by the aroma of fresh urine. I’m not aware whether that has changed or not. It always seems counter intuitive to have to go to a cafe or restaurant and purchase a drink when the sole reason for the visit is to reduce the amount of liquid you are retaining. Other European countries seem to now have recognised the problem and the provision of council run toilets in Italy, Greece and even France is so much better than it was in the past. Perhaps Spain will catch up one day?

I do hope there is an emergency release lock in them as well. There was a case of one in Dublin where somebody was locked in for hours when the door malfunctioned and there was no way of releasing from the outside and the Council Offices were closed. The emergency number was connected to a Company in the UK who didn't know who to call in Ireland!!
