Spain To Make Some Train Journeys Free From September

Post: # 30750Post Carl »

During the week the Government announced a windfall tax, an element of which would offset free train travel on short and medium state run train journeys.

As they say, the devil is in the detail !

"The 100% rail discounts will apply to multi-trip ticket journeys on cercanías (commuter services) and media distancia, or medium-distance routes (less than 300km). The measure is mainly aimed at Spanish season ticket holders but tourists could take advantage of it if they bought multi-journey tickets."

"Multi-journey tickets include a minimum of 10 return trips."

Maybe advantageous for tourist doing a city break but staying outside of the city who will travel to/from frequently.

Not sure how the train ticketing system works, but wonder what checks are in place to ensure that someone does not book a multi-journey ticket and then only uses it for a single journey ?

We love using the Spanish train network clean reliable etc etc BUT when it comes to buying tickets on offer it is a nightmare !!!
The RENFE web site is so difficult to navigate you give up and there are now less and less personal in ticket offices to help you and when you do find one they point you to the ticket machine .
We do have a frequent user ticket which is useful and gives discount but that then stops any other discounts ARGH
Another good idea in theory but will be so hard to use in practice which is a shame
