Where is it?

I have just returned from a few days in the UK. We disembarked from the plane in Manchester expecting to see starving people in the streets, sick and dying in doorways, bars empty, all the lights out in windows, town centres like ghost towns, illegal immigrants everywhere... but no.

The UK seemed buzzing. Fancy cars everywhere, crowds of shoppers all paying over the odds for tat. No room at restaurants unless you booked days ago, hotels booked up.. and a general manic rush everywhere to be ready for a bumper Christmas. And we were not in an affluent area, but the north west of England (Coronation Street land).

Where is the deprivation? .. what deprivation?
