Ingredients
- 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- pinch of chilli flakes
- 500g lamb mince
- 1 tbsp tomato purée
- 400g can chopped tomatoes
- 600g swede, peeled and sliced as thinly as possible
For the topping
- 25g butter
- 25g plain flour
- 300ml milk
- 1 large egg
- 100g feta, crumbled
Method
1. Heat the oil in a pan, fry onion until soft. Add garlic and cook for few minutes. Stir in spices and chilli. Add lamb and brown all over. Drain fat, return pan to the heat. Stir in tomato purée, cook for 1 minute, then tip in tomatoes plus half a can of water. Stir, season, simmer for 15 minutes.
2. Preheat oven to 180°C/Fan 160°C/Gas Mark 4. Lightly oil a 1.5 litre ovenproof dish, arrange a third of the swede on the bottom. Ladle over half the mince mixture, top with more swede and repeat, finishing with swede.
3. For topping, heat butter in a pan, stir in flour. Remove from heat, stir in milk until smooth. Return to heat, cook for 4 - 5 minutes until thick. Remove from heat, whisk in egg and half the feta. Pour over swede, sprinkle with rest of feta. Cover with foil, bake for 35 - 45 minutes. Remove foil, cook for 25 - 30 minutes until golden and swede is tender.
