Unfortunately It was only a matter of time. The new law starting in January regarding having civil liability insurance will be largely ignored as the premium will probably be more than the value of the E scooter.

Wearing helmets is only mandatory which is complete madness, yet it's compulsory to wear them on a bicycle.

I thought you couldn't ride an e-scooter on the N332.

There has been an explosion of e scooter use around blue lagoon , especially in the evening, and they are still riding two to a scooter without helmets
I think people are using them to get to and from pubs or restaurants, they probably think it is ok to drink and drive on one and will be immune from getting stopped , unlike a car
I have also noted people using them in the early hours of the morning, someone passed my house on the road at 4.am the other night, ok , they could have been on an early shift for work or coming home from a nightclub, but it also crossed my mind burglars could be using them for a fast getaway , who knows
But this accident doesn't surprise me, i am amazed there has not been more , they streak in and out of traffic and junctions at speed without looking properly and some i see no sign of having speed limiters fitted

You are correct Bee. An N road is an interurban road and e-scooters are not permitted on them.

Regarding insurance, update on the law that was due to come into effect on 2 January. Delayed, and with no indication when it will become effective.

I am almost certain this is to do with possible lost revenue on hiring them out
The rental companies would have far more administration when hiring them out and ensuring the riders were insured
If the company has to insure them on behalf of the rider then the cost of hiring will probably double, meaning less rentals and less revenue in taxes for the government
I would say it will take the death of someone to get more legislation in place but even that doesn't seem to affect anything as we see here
So you will still see the underage riding them, some two to a scooter , without helmets and some over the limit and riding on unauthorised roads
No new years resolution here then

I've completely lost count of the number of scooter riders I've seen wearing helmets but not done up making them completely useless. Also frequently seen them hanging equally uselessly on the handlebars.

Great source of donor organs though!
